The DT 770 M spec says 35 dB noise isolation, and I can definitively say that is not the case for me. I have a Sennheiser PXC550 and a 3M worktunes. Before anyone suspects, I did not turn on active noise canceling when comparing the headphones. In terms of passive isolation, the 3M worktunes with upgraded gel cushions is the clear winner, easily matching the advertised 24 dB rating. The PXC 550 with ANC turned off is pretty good at noise isolation, but not as good as the 3M worktunes. The DT 770 M is last among these 3 as it leaks a lot of outside noise in.

In terms of sound quality, the PXC 550 is clearly first, the DT 770 M is second, while the 3M Worktunes is a close third. Seriously, the 3M Worktunes isn''t that bad in terms of sound quality!

All that said, you may have a skull shape that is different from mine and the 35 dB rating of the DT 770 M is actually true. For me, both the PXC 550 and Worktunes blow the DT 770 M out of the water in the isolation department. I really wish that I did not have to return the headphone.

Okay, this is going to sound like I''m selling these headphones or I have stock in the company but I don''t. I intentionally waited a few months before writing this up so I would have an opportunity to see how well they hold up. I bought them thinking they were more money than I wanted to spend but what the heck. I have them plugged into a sound board which connects to my iPod and to drum mics. From the very first time I played them with these headphones I was OMG! I was stunned.

I have had numerous over-the-ears headsets and earplug headsets the past 10 years and they all have contributed to hearing loss in one way or another. Nothing ever balanced right and I had to keep the volume up to overcome the ambient sound of the drums. These headphones darn near eliminate the ambient drum sound which allows me to operate them at a very low volume and still distinctly hear both the music and the drums without the ambient drum noise masking them both. My Beyerdynamic DT-770s are every bit as good as my high end Bose over-the-ear headphones I use on long international flights. They do different things, of course, but in terms of overall quality and effectiveness at what they do, I''d rate them equal.

If these headphone were hanging in a music store and I had a chance to play drums wearing them, I''d easily have been willing to pay double what they cost. To say I''m pleased would be a gross understatement and while they''re a bit bulky that''s precisely why they are extremely comfortable to wear. The Beyerdynamic DT-770-M-80 headphones as good as any headsets I have ever owned including my Bose.

I have many phones. I drive these with a Behringer Powerplay Pro XL while drumming. They seem to play plenty loud with my HP amplifier.

These have excellent isolation. Maybe a little too much isolation. From what I can remember, they have even better isolation than the Vic Firth drum phones I broke long ago.

The drums sound a little dull and muted to me, but I do not need to crank the music in the phones so loud to hear the snare in the song I am playing along too.

I thought the volume control, which works well, is mounted just right so it can be adjusted by my shoulder while I am playing. In my case they got turned up way too loud. I had to take a tie wrap and put a little loop in the cord (see picture) so this would not happen.

The cord is not too thin or thick, just right and seems plenty sturdy.

Quality of sound is not as beautiful as Sennheiser HD600 Or as laid back and natural as AkG 240 or bassy as JVC RX300. I was expecting the combination of the above but not what I got. But after getting used to these I have to admit I am liking the sound a lot.

Lets see how they last. I have a nack for destroying headphones and will know if these will last. My 600 ohm AKG240''s studio monitors have lasted over 30 years. Pads are good and cord is good and they still sound great.

I can only give them 4 stars because they should put the volume control where it will not self adjust while moving about otherwise 5 stars.

I bought these headphones to use in my home recording studio. I play mostly hard rock, and when I''m recording my drum parts, I often have difficulty hearing the rest of the instruments. So after a bit of research I decided to give these phones a try. I''ve been using them for a coupe of weeks now, and I have to say I absolutely love them.

They do a great job of filtering out the sounds of both the drums and the cymbals. Of course, I can still hear what I''m playing, but now the live drums sounds coming from the room are nicely mixed with the sounds of rest of the band coming from the headphones. I don''t have to crank up the volume too high, which is good on the ears, but I still have the option to turn it up a bit on the more rocking tunes.

I do have have two minor criticisms on these phones. First, the sound quality is a notch below my Bose or Yamaha headphones, so I don''t use them for mixing. Not a problem for me since that''s not why I bought them. Second, the volume control is a bit too touchy. When I''m recording, I typically have the cord falling behind me. The first time I used them, while I was playing, the volume control rubbed against my shoulder which caused the sound to turn completely off. A quick re-routing of the cord to fall in front of the shoulder and under the arm has solved the problem. An easy workaround, but a firmer volume control would be a good idea.

The bottom line - these headphones are exactly what I need, and the two minor drawbacks don''t impact their ability to perform the role for which they were purchased. No question - five stars.

These are the best cans I’ve ever had. I know it might sound odd but I wear these all night to drown out everything including snoring. I’m an audio engineer and can tell you these sound incredible. They have just the right amount of bass and the mids and highs are very balanced. My only annoyance about these is that they last about 5-9 months. I sleep in them every night and I’m a pretty rough sleeper, but every time they break it’s in the same spot. The connection to the volume control. The wire always pulls out of that section and if I tape them I can get maybe another month out of them. But this happens every time. I’ve had 4 pairs. Again I love them, but this is the weakest point on these headphones. Unless you’re being as rough with them as I am, they should last you a good long time. I’m going to contact the company about this issue and with my next pair I’ll be running a bead of superglue around the wire connectors to the volume control “box”. And then using some hard core tape to keep it from pulling out and exposing the wiring.

This is easily the best headphone I''ve ever bought in my life !!!!!!!!!! I''m a musician and I have never worn a more comfortable pair of headphones like these. It even has special padding for the top of the head. The sound is very deep and thick. Yet, I can hear the high frequencies clearly. I also love that these don''t break. I''ve had my headphones for a while and I can feel the strength in the side connections without it feeling tight on me. With other headphones I''ve owned they would break when you bend them a lot to put them out in the process of stretching them to fit on your head. Not these. I give this rave review because a company finally did it right and thought about us the customer in making the right sounding headphone, a comfortable headphone where I don''t get irritated even wearing it for 10 hours straight. It even has a volume control on the wire itself connected to the headphone. The wire length is really long. Also, its only one wire connected to the headphone freeing up your other side of your head. I''m telling people, this is MY DREAM HEADPHONE. I wish I could give it more that five stars !!!!!

I have huge ears, so this complaint is only relevant to others who share my predicament. I have replaced the cups on my planar hifiman''s and my gaming logitech set with brainwavz ear cups, but that wasn''t a viable option with these. To reiterate, these are large cups but they just aren''t large enough for elephant ears like mine. Sound and build quality are top notch though!

Didn''t realize the 50ohm design would take so much power. Compared to my ATH-M50''s (35ohm) these are MUCH quieter and really quite dull — lacking bass and treble response. Also, compared the ATH50, my high end studio near-field monitors, and my dual driver in-ear monitors, these have a muddy/boxy sounding midrange as well — almost gives a sense of the track sounding mono. Maybe with a higher-powered true headphone amp they will produce better sound? This is tough because many studio audio interfaces and mixing desks headphone output are not particularity high output. For studio drumming work I''ll have to stick with my in-ear monitors for volume and punchy response. The volume control and cable work fine but feel a little cheap with that stiffer vinyl feel and the volume slider is easily bumped — just another thing to break.

I bought this so I can practice piano while people are watching TV. When you pop them on first you may be disappointed that you can still hear other sounds, but the moment you start listening through them you can''t hear a thing from outside. Quality is fine I have tested with only TV/talking, cooking noises, kids annoying me etc. No idea if it stops aircraft noise etc. Would be very suitable for noisy office. I have a fat head and its still comfy, but its a very firm fit so if you''re looking for all day office headphones I would probably consider something else. I got the 80 Ohms version and my digital piano drives it.

These Beyerdynamic DT770M were bought primarily for use while playing acoustic drums to replace the Vic Firth isolation headphones we''ve had for last few years as one of the speakers failed and they have been used with in ear phones for several months. Having researched the alternatives online for over ear isolation headphones (they are used by other members of the family so didn''t want IEMs) we ended up not much the wiser with all the conflicting reports. Looking to spend around £100 initially, these were on sale for £122, the 770Ms seemed a better buy than the Vic Firths and were suggested for drummers over the Sennheiser 280s and 380s. Went for the 80 ohms set as they were for use with various sound sources. The 770Ms arrived next day, great. Tried them with smart phones, laptop, and amplifiers - they all powered them but the sound quality was not as high as expected, even being aware that isolation phones with closed backs have their problems. I''m no expert but the sound was only slightly better than my £20 Sony''s, which give no isolation. The 770s are more balanced but they don''t isolate quite as well as the Vic Firth''s which have been criticised in other threads. The 770s do sound better than the Vic Firths and are much more comfortable so better over long periods. Also like that you can buy spare components, shame the good length cable is not detachable for replacement or to use them just for ear protection without dismantling them. The in-line volume control is useful but too easily moved accidentally. The build quality does seem good, the fit and pressure are fine and the sound quality is reasonable but for the main purpose of protecting your hearing they fall short of my expectations, especially as they''re advertised as giving "Maximum isolation". Disappointing as they were chosen partly on the basis that you get what you pay for, manufacturers reputation and recommendation for use by drummers and FOH. They are good (some reviewers suggest the sound improves with use) but a new set of Vic Firth''s, at less than half the recommended price of £181 may be better value as ear protectors.

Was super excited to receive these having looked at all the positive reviews. Best way to describe these, is that I felt like I was listening to music in the far distance the whole time I was wearing them. The mids and highs are clear, but the bass is absolutely non-existent. Like there is genuinely minimal bass even at high volume. How are you supposed to level sound in DAWs with no bass? These headphones wear super comfortable, but I could just never justify £100 for something which doesn’t even sound as good as my Apple earphones that came free with my phone. They genuinely sound better than these overall.
